Simple care for longer-lasting flowers

A little attention when your flowers arrive helps them settle well and keeps them looking their best.

When your bouquet arrives

Remove the outer packaging and any water-resistant wrapping around the stems. Give the bouquet room to open and place it in a clean vase as soon as you can.

Give the stems a fresh cut

Trim 2–3 cm from the stems at an angle with a clean, sharp knife or secateurs. This creates a fresh surface for the flowers to drink from. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.

Keep the water clean

Fill the vase with fresh water, top it up regularly and replace it every couple of days. Clean the vase when you change the water so bacteria do not build up around the stems.

Find the right place

Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators, strong draughts and very warm rooms. Ripening fruit can also shorten the life of some flowers, so give your arrangement space from the fruit bowl.

Let the arrangement evolve

Flowers open at different speeds. Remove individual stems when they fade and enjoy the changing shape of the arrangement. A bouquet often looks different from day to day, and that is part of its character.

Check the foam each day and add a small amount of fresh water when it feels low. Pour slowly onto the foam rather than overfilling the container, and remove fading stems to give the remaining flowers room.
